Mark Steyn in today’s National Post.
The problem with Jerusalem is not one of jurisdictional technicalities: it’s that a substantial proportion of Palestinians see a two-state solution as an intermediate stage to a one-state solution. You may well agree with the jihadi on that: certainly many Europeans do. But there’s no reason at all why Israel should go along with it.

Damian Penny reports on Soetkin Collier, the neo-Nazi singer for the band that was going to represent Belgium in the
Eurovision Song Contest. Quite frankly, they should have been allowed to play, not just because of freedom of expression issues, but
to see the crowd’s reactions and how National Socialism really fits into the “Eurovision”.
Here’s her band’s website. Shaking up Celtic music indeed. And here’s a photo (click on the picture for more).
Since I’m on the topic, and I’m in Austria right now, I might as well point you to
these two articles about Austria and the Nazis. Austria resists paying restitution for
property seized from the Jews (we’re not talking reparations here, just paying for the f*cking
stuff they took), and Austrian
Jews had to pay to be deported to death camps. Here’s a charming paragraph, just in case you’re
one of the sorts of persons that “Bush is Nazi” makes sense to:
Of the roughly 200,000 Jews living in Austria before the country was annexed by the Nazis in 1938, some 65,000 perished in the Holocaust, mostly in Nazi concentration camps. Most of the rest were forced to leave or fled to escape certain death.
At the end of the war, only about 1,000 Jews had survived.

I’m not a huge defender of Toronto cops, but this article in the National
Post about the bogosity of racial profiling claims against the Metro Police is
worth reading, especially in light that the Ontario Human Rights Commission
has decided to launch a witch-hunt against them. No one should have any doubts what conclusions they’ll find,
even ignoring the fact that the respondents are a self-selected group bearing grudges.
If there’s really no work for them
to do, maybe it’s time they disbanded.
That’s the real rub, you see: The police are not generally granted the right to engage, unless, that is, that engagement consists of sitting by silently as they are portrayed as racists, and not lifting a finger to defend themselves.

I thought I was the only one who liked the movie. I saw it a couple of times while it was in the theater, and then again on video!

And it feels like home more that Toronto does. Die Zeit had a picture of Bush yesterday dressed up as a Roman gladiator.
I don’t know why it’s such a joy to see such simple anti-Americanism. They really have no clue what the US is about, I think.
The headline (click on the picture) is:
Europa ist machtlos. Washingtons Rückzug findet nicht statt. My crappy translation:
Europe is powerless. Washington is not retreating.

The PQ separatists are getting desperate pretty desperate now for an issue to hitch their hat to. Grande Fromage Bernard “take out the” Landry thinks that an anti-war rally in Montreal drew “up to” 150,000 protestors (it was 100,000 yesterday) is proof that Quebec is a nation.
Fortunately, Canada has a PM that’s an even more slippery eel than he, so it looks like the odds of traction on this issue is minimal. With Jack Layton, NDP supreme-comrade making speeches at the paltry 10,000 people in Toronto on Saturday, one is reminded of “where are the people going, so I may lead them”.
Premier Bernard Landry says the high turnout at this weekend’s anti-war demonstration in Montreal is one more reason why sovereignty is a good idea.
Up to 150,000 people took to the streets of Montreal Saturday afternoon. In Quebec City, that figure was closer to 6,000.
Landry says the demonstration showed Quebecers gather as a nation, to demonstrate concerns over international issues.
Landry also says demonstrations show Quebecers are more opposed to war than elsewhere in the West.
Landry told a PQ youth council on Sunday that the size of the demonstrations show there are actually two nations in Canada.

I have a working proposal Standardizated Weblog Metadata over here at my new Technology Blog.
I’d appreciate your input.
Standardized Weblog Metadata is what makes it easy for me to produce
RSS feeds
for your blog, and in the future, will make it easier for other tools (such as the various Ecosystems)
to understand your blog also.

Don Parks is developing his idea further, though it looks like it’s drifting to become unnecessarily complex. His design point is readability for the user, and that’s why he’s using this such as double quotes to encode data. I still think my proposal below has merit, and I may even implement it if I get a few spare moments to myself. I think this could be done very easily in Java 1.4 using NIO and regexs, though I’m not sure what the merit of writing a parser for a file format that will get minimal usage, even here at work is. Anyhoo, my design points are, in decreasing order of importance: the ability to correctly write it, speed of parsing, and simplicity.
Here’s two other instructions that are needed for dealing with core XML text. More information will be needed for dealing with Processing Instructions and whatnot, but we’ll deal with that later. First, we need a way of encoding this type of data:
<text> line one a line of text without an ending newline</text>
This would be encoded as follows, using the double “..” directive
text . line one .. a line of text without an ending newline
Next, it would be nice to be able to do something like CDATA. I propose the triple “…” directive — don’t worry, that’s as far as I’ll go with that!
text ... Here is the equivalent of a CDATA section. It's main purpose is for easy of typing data by a user. The text is assumed to start at the same indentation level as the triple dots, to preserve nice looking documents! ...
