Carnival of the Canucks #23

Carnival of the Canucks #23 is up at Generation Exhausted. Sorry for the late notice — I was so caught up in the election, my birthday and generally being kinda ill yesterday.

Interested in hosting a Carnival? Send me a note or leave a message in the comments section.

Election Roundup

I’ll be updating this post as I see stuff:

Peaktalk:

As a foreign observant I am still mystified what the underlying reason is for the inability to turn this country even slighly to the right. True, the country never had a Reagan or Thatcher but then you would think that someday, sooner or later, Canadians would follow in the footsteps of their Anglo-Saxon brethren and opt for small government and low taxes. Especially given the geographical similarities with its southern neighbour it’s not unthinkable that entrepreneurial regionalism would somehow support a steady course away from statist adventures. Regional dependency is more like it.

Mark Steyn:

10.50pm: If these numbers hold, we’re looking at a Liberal minority government governing well to the left of M Chretien’s three ministries. So it’s corruption plus socialism. That’s great news, isn’t it?

Damian Penny:

I feel like such a Rube

Kathy Shaidle:

Grasping, puny-minded wimps elect two-faced cynical liar.

This election proves that we care only about beer, smokes, hockey and lottery tickets. Just keep the “free” stuff coming, don’t ask us to think too hard, don’t challenge our preconceived cliched notions about “Canadian values.”

Ron Knowling:

There will be alot of people who are going to sit down soon and try to analyse this loss for the PCs. Here are a few pointers on things not to do in an election:

Don’t suggest to the electorate you are going to hold free votes on Abortion!
Don’t offer to enhance Canada’s military by buying aircraft carriers!
Don’t suggest you will scrap biligualism.
Don’t say the Not With Standing Clause is a good way to block minority rights.
Don’t make a broad series of promises which will put the country back into deficit.
Don’t complain about Liberal dishonesty when your own party is founded on a lie.

May I add “if your party believes in giving us economic freedom, it shouldn’t be offering to take away our social freedom in return”. Also: “A campaign about nothing is fine for Jerry Sienfeld, but not for Canadians”.

Blogs Canada Election Blog:

Tories Lose

Exactly.

Michael Demmons:

Thank God!

Jeez, I remember the student newspaper back in the early 80′s advocating for gay rights and I don’t ever remember the subject of marriage coming up once. Now you’re willing to have a government full of criminals and looters because the miniscule chance of losing it is that important?

Ianism.com:

Maybe it IS time to start thinking seriously about separating Canada into different little parts. I’m looking at the thus far election results, and when you really look at them, there is such an obvious difference in political thought and beliefs from region to region.

Or meaningfully asserting that within their legal domains, provincial governments are peer to the federal government, not subordinate.

Paul Wells:

The Night’s Loser: Change

Dispatches:

Anne McLellan seems to have the lead by over 500 votes. Let me get this straight, we couldn’t even unseat Landslide Anne.

Debbye (Being American in Toronto):

Attack ads and fear-mongering work up here, as Toronto voters swallowed their outrage at the corruption of the Liberal Party and voted “for the devils they knew” who will likely form a minority government with the New Democratic Party -who are even further to the left of the Liberals (No looking back.)

Joey says:

I’m worse than Hitler. I was hoping for a Conservative minority government.

Sorry about that! I was channelling the “thoughts” of the typical Queen Street denzien this morning.
